Financial Times (November 23)

2017/ 11/ 24 by jd in Global News

“Mitsubishi Materials has admitted its subsidiaries falsified data about products used in crucial parts of aircraft and cars, dragging another of Japan’s largest manufacturers into the data falsification scandal at Kobe Steel…. The disclosure will raise the pressure on Japan’s manufacturing sector, which has been struck in the past two months by certification scandals at carmakers Nissan and Subaru, as well as Kobe Steel, Japan’s third-largest steelmaker.”

Time (November 22)

“The defection, subsequent surgeries and slow recovery of the soldier have riveted South Korea, but it will be a huge embarrassment for the North, which claims all defections are the result of rival Seoul kidnapping or enticing North Koreans to defect. Pyongyang has said nothing about the defection so far.”

Barron’s (November 20)

According to Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Ajay Kapur, “Asian and emerging markets could easily double over the next two years or so….  It is really earnings that are driving Asian markets. Global growth is not that strong, but it is pervasive. Of the 38 countries from which we get purchasing-managers index information, 87% are above 50, which means they are expanding. That’s the highest since 2011.”

Bloomberg (November 20)

“After 12 years in office that have made her Europe’s anchor of stability in times of crisis, Merkel failed to stitch together an alliance that’s never been tried at the national level. While the breakdown leaves her in charge as acting chancellor, the collapse may signal the limit of her pragmatic, non-ideological style of governing and leaves her options for staying in power for another four years dramatically narrowed.”

The Economist (November 18)

2017/ 11/ 20 by jd in Global News

“A market exists for rooftop solar panels and electric vehicles; one for removing an invisible gas from the air to avert disaster decades from now does not.” But it must and fast. The need for negative emissions technology “will be gargantuan. The median IPCC model assumes sucking up a total of 810bn tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2100, equivalent to roughly 20 years of global emissions at the current rate. To have any hope of doing so, preparations for large-scale extraction ought to begin in the 2020s.”

Nordic Business Insider (November 17)

2017/ 11/ 19 by jd in Global News

“Norway’s $1 trillion pension fund wants to ditch all oil and gas stocks.” The irony of the proposed move is that the Government Pension Fund of Norway has become the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund by investing Norway’s oil and gas revenue. The move is not being proposed as a bet against petroleum, but rather to mitigate risk through diversification. “The fund’s exposure to fossil fuel markets is currently double that of a standard global fund.”

Wall Street Journal (November 16)

2017/ 11/ 18 by jd in Global News

“Google became the world’s go-to source of information by ranking billions of links from millions of sources. Now, for many queries, the internet giant is presenting itself as the authority on truth by promoting a single search result as the answer.” Many of the results, Google selects, however, “are contentious, improbable or laughably incorrect.”

The Guardian (November 15)

2017/ 11/ 17 by jd in Global News

“In a fluid, confusing and opaque situation, the fact that a coup was taking place was one of the few certainties.” Yet, to avoid international complications, nearly everyone avoided that four-letter word when describing the military overthrow of Robert Mugabe. A cautious optimism prevails. Zimbabwe may have escaped a worst fate. “Yet the prospect of President Mnangagwa is hardly a cause for celebration. His long years as Mr Mugabe’s chief enforcer tell one much of what we need to know about his record. The nickname he earned, ‘the Crocodile’, says the rest…. Ordinary Zimbabweans appear as far as ever from taking power.”

Washington Post (November 14)

2017/ 11/ 16 by jd in Global News

Donald Trump’s “Asia tour has been at times a disaster, at times a farce.” To pick a “most shameful moment” would be challenging. “There was a time when the world looked to the U.S. president to speak clearly in defense of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights. I refer to the entirety of modern U.S. history before January, when Trump assumed the high office he now dishonors.”

Institutional Investor (November 13)

2017/ 11/ 15 by jd in Global News

“AI will transform asset management,” but “the biggest challenge we face may not be developing powerful predictive AI-based investment models.” Rather, it will be “simply convincing investors not to trust their own judgment. More broadly, the winners and losers will be decided not by the current market position of a firm or even the size of its checkbook, but by its ability to overcome its anthropocentric prejudice and trust AI like it would trust a human being.”
