New York Times (February 28)

In the U.S., the “sad demise” of the summer job is continuing and must be checked. We need to “help connect young people with summer jobs that give them not just money, but also valuable work experience…. When summer jobs were plentiful, young people gained skills and experiences that made them attractive to future employers.”

Wall Street Journal (October 1)

2015/ 10/ 02 by jd in Global News

The peak car theory that millennials no longer want cars cars “may seem plausible given recent history: tepid new-car sales, fewer miles driven per capita and shrinking gasoline use. In reality, it’s poppycock.” This temporary phenomenon merely “reflected a lack of jobs and money.” Today, that’s changing. “The forecasts of peak car look to be about as accurate as those of peak oil.”

“Beijing still believes money can buy the trust and soft power it craves, which explains the new $100 billion Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank it has sponsored. But as long as analysts don’t feel the Chinese government’s pronouncements are genuinely reliable, skepticism about the yuan will only grow.”

“Climate-change deniers are in retreat.” Funding is being cut off for groups that once tried to justify the increasingly untenable position that human activities are not causing climate change. “For politicians and climate-denial groups, the elixir of life is money. The Economist (March 21)

The Islamic State (IS) may still be launching attacks, but “the good news is that cracks in the caliphate are becoming increasingly apparent. IS is losing ground, money and the consent of the people it rules.”

Financial Times (November 24)

2014/ 11/ 25 by jd in Global News

“‘Lung washing tours’ are the new thing in Chinese tourism.” Sales have taken off as people seek refuge from the polluted air, but these often require vast treks to reach a place with clean air. “The truth is that despite what the tour operators say, fleeing pollution is not all that easy in today’s China – no matter how much money you spend (and carbon dioxide you emit) getting away.”

Financial Times (May 2)

2014/ 05/ 03 by jd in Global News

“First money and low-cost production jumped across borders, now it is creativity and services.” Knowledge intensive flows “are now worth a heady $12.6tn; to set this in context, this is half of all cross-border flows, and almost four-fifths the size of the US economy.” This new “globalisation does not just threaten western manufacturing jobs, but many service jobs too.”

NBC News (April 26)

2014/ 04/ 28 by jd in Global News

“The wheels of commerce along Rodeo Drive are no longer greased by oil money (“black gold, Texas tea”) or by much American money at all.” Sales to international travelers now “fuel” the economy and “Chinese alone account for 60 percent of sales on Rodeo Drive.”

The Economist (April 5)

2014/ 04/ 06 by jd in Global News

“Reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian gas is possible—but it will take time, money and sustained political will.” With his belligerence and threats, Putin has indirectly done Europe’s leaders a favor by galvanizing their collective will. “They already knew what to do. They just didn’t want to do it.”
