Financial Times (December 23)

2023/ 12/ 24 by jd in Global News

“The UK economy shrank slightly in the third quarter.” Revised figures “highlight the country’s struggle to shake off its low-growth performance and raise the risk of a technical recession…. The UK economy is stuck in a lacklustre state as it struggles with high borrowing costs and the legacy of the worst inflationary upsurge for a generation.”

Financial Times (December 1)

“Something weird is happening in America. GDP growth for Q3 was just revised up from an already scorching 4.9 per cent to 5.2 per cent, more Americans have jobs than at any time in history, but the public is up in arms about economic conditions, with consumer confidence dropping to a six-month low. There really is no pleasing some people.”

American Banker (November 6)

“Bank consolidation, caught in a 2023 deep freeze, could thaw and accelerate in the coming year and beyond, executives of acquisitive banks said during the third-quarter earnings season.”

Wall Street Journal (October 26)

2023/ 10/ 27 by jd in Global News

“The U.S. economy keeps on growing, and in the third quarter it positively boomed. This is good news by any measure, though it’s striking how few economists think it can keep going. Let’s hope they keep being wrong.”

Wall Street Journal (September 24)

“Finance chiefs and investors are trying to figure out how to account for coronavirus-related expenses as the pandemic transforms how companies operate in ways that may become a permanent cost of doing business.” The effects of COVID-19 are now expected to last for months, if not years, but “some companies continue to treat virus-related costs as special, one-time items, which can give the impression that a business’s costs are lower than they actually are,” boosting, for example, adjusted Ebitda. Some professionals believe it is now time for “treating these items as regular costs of doing business as they close the books for the third quarter and not adjust their non-GAAP earnings.”

Bloomberg (November 16)

2019/ 11/ 18 by jd in Global News

China’s Q3 expansion is “the weakest since the government began releasing quarterly data in 1992. An obvious cause is the ongoing trade war…, but the economy would be decelerating even without that as is transitions away from the high debt, often wasteful growth model of the past. The knock-on effects are global, affecting companies and consumers alike.”

Institutional Investor (October 18)

2015/ 10/ 20 by jd in Global News

Falling U.S. equity prices during the third quarter have “left investors asking whether the terrific run in U.S. equities since 2011 is over. Is the setback a buying opportunity or the beginning of a more serious downturn?” Overall, “we think there are enough positives to keep profits increasing at a high-single-digit rate over the next five to seven years.”

Institutional Investor (September 30)

2015/ 10/ 01 by jd in Global News

A volatile third quarter has come to the close. “With the final stretch for 2015 about to begin, portfolio managers must now take stock of the carnage and decide whether market dynamics have permanently shifted in response to changing macro forces, or if long-term trends are set to extend beyond this recent volatility.”
