“Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell summoned Wall Street leaders to an urgent meeting on Anthropic.” The AI firm’s new Mythos system is thought to be “capable of identifying and then exploiting vulnerabilities in every major operating system and web browser.” The leaders, who represented global systemically important banks, were summoned “to make sure banks are aware of possible future risks… and are taking precautions to defend their systems.”

The Economist (February 24)
“It is futile to speculate how much Russia’s efforts succeeded in altering the outcomes of votes and poisoning politics. The answer is unknowable. But the conspiracies are wrong in themselves and their extent raises worries about the vulnerabilities of Western democracies. If the West is going to protect itself against Russia and other attackers, it needs to treat Mr Mueller’s indictments as a rallying cry.”

The WannaCry attack reads like the script to “a Hollywood disaster film.” Even though it had a relatively happy ending, “the incident rammed home two unpleasant truths about the computerised world. The first is that the speed, scalability and efficiency of computers are a curse as well as a blessing.” Digital data “can be sent around the world in milliseconds,” both a blessing and a bane. “The second unpleasant truth is that opportunities for mischief will only grow.” As we embrace the internet or things, vulnerabilities will multiply “as computers find their way into everything from cars and pacemakers to fridges and electricity grids.”
