“First, the Iran war made flights more expensive. Now, it’s making them disappear.” Aviation analytics firm Cirium found that “19 of the world’s 20 largest airlines have cut flights in May.” Jet fuel prices have skyrocketed, “doubling in price to almost $200 a barrel. And as the war drags on, jet fuel is getting harder to come by.” Cirium had predicted annual flight capacity growth of 4%-6%, but now envisions a decline of up to 3%.

The next seven days of the Iran conflict will set the stage for stagflation or global recession.” The U.S. was nearing perfection with unemployment at 4.4% and inflation down to 2.4%. Instead of basking in economic triumph, the U.S. now frets over a potential “doubling of the oil price,” which historically “coincides with a global recession. In today’s terms, that is $120-$140 a barrel. Brent crude brushed the bottom of that range earlier this week.”

“Annual issuance of U.S. Treasurys has exploded, nearly doubling since the pandemic began. The government sold a record $23 trillion worth in 2023.” This makes people “nervous” because “rapid growth in markets from tech stocks to mortgage bonds has ended badly in the past.” Given their ubiquity and potentially “unforeseen consequences,” any instability in the Treasury market “could rapidly spread” to other markets.

“The Bank of England has warned the UK is facing its longest recession since records began, as it raised interest rates by the most in 33 years,” indicating that “the UK would face a ‘very challenging’ two-year slump with unemployment nearly doubling by 2025.” The BoE’s forecast paints “a picture of a painful economic period, with the UK performing worse than the US and the Eurozone.”

“A doubling of COVID-19 cases in the past two weeks suggests the USA has entered a fourth wave of the pandemic.” Deaths and hospitalization rates may stay lower than previous waves and instead of ravaging “entire communities,” this wave “is likely to target the unvaccinated, including children, and if rates are high enough, the most vulnerable of the vaccinated—the elderly and the immunocompromised.”
