Sydney Morning Herald (August 10)

“There are 68 trusts in China with about $4.3 trillion of assets – property loans, shares, bonds and commodities – under management, with property accounting for at least $500 billion of the total.” The National Audit Office has been instructed “to inspect the books of the country’s biggest trust firms.” This shows “the increasing concern of the Chinese authorities that the implosion of their property development sector could ignite a wider financial crisis.”

In March, the Japanese yen “lost around 8% against the dollar… dropping to a six-year low below 125 on Monday.” Some believe that level “raises alarm among Japanese authorities, as a previous drop to that level triggered verbal warnings by BOJ’s Kuroda.” However, in terms of the “real, effective exchange rate—an indicator that captures the international competitiveness of a currency,” the yen is performing even worse, having “slid to less than half” of 1995’s peak.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution (November 5)

“On Thursday, Georgia topped 25,000 confirmed deaths in the 20-month-long coronavirus pandemic… the same week that the U.S. toll reached 750,000 and the global toll 5 million.” The reality is likely grimmer. “The number is likely a significant undercount…. In addition to undiagnosed cases, the state listed and additional 5,351 deaths as ‘probable’ pandemic deaths—ones attributed by health authorities to COVID-19 but not yet confirmed with the proper test.”

“Long ago, Julian Assange wore out his welcome at Ecuador’s London embassy.” He finally “got his eviction notice Thursday…. Ecuador’s decision to hand Assange over had been a long time coming—too long. He was the embassy Guest Who Wouldn’t Leave. Now, finally, Assange has moved on to new lodgings — for the time being courtesy of the British authorities.”

The unfolding truth “appears to be rather different” than “the narrative spun by Nissan and apparently condoned by Japanese authorities.” When the full story about Ghosn is revealed, “it threatens to do at least as much damage to the reputation of the government and industry alliance known as Japan Inc as to the man at the centre of the affair” for it increasingly appears “Nissan’s old guard struck back against their ‘gaijin’ savior.”

“There is no consensus on what a crypto-asset is. Even within countries, authorities disagree on how to classify them. Are they a commodity, a currency, a security or their own, peculiar asset class?” The Swiss regulator, FINMA, took what may become a popular approach. FINMA’s treatment of crypto-assets will be based “on their actual function—ie, whether they are used for payments; as a utility token that gives its holder access to a specific service; or as an investment. This also means a token’s classification can change over time.”

Wall Street Journal (October 30)

“Recent cases show that foreign companies need to be more cognizant of Chinese laws and the nuances of the country’s political system.” Two weeks ago, China detained 18 employees from Crown Resorts Ltd., but authorities “have declined to give details, and no charges have been made public.” More aggressive enforcement has some business consultants “advising foreign executives to steer clear of mainland China for now.”

Washington Post (January 24)

2016/ 01/ 25 by jd in Global News

“The Washington region on Sunday lurched fitfully from under one of the heaviest snowfalls in memory, with federal and local governments set to be closed on Monday, the Metro system prepared to offer severely limited service Monday, and authorities warning that it could take days for the plows to reach some residential streets.”

New York Times (September 19)

“Taiwan obviously needs a stronger food-safety policy with meaningful penalties.” The latest in a series of food scandals involves the sale of nearly 650 tons of adulterated “gutter oil,” which was produced from unsuitable sources, such as restaurant waste, and sold as cooking oil. “The Taiwanese authorities need to be doing more than reacting to food-safety problems on an ad hoc basis to ensure that what people eat is safe.”

Financial Times (August 4)

In what’s regarded as “a notorious feature of the world’s second-biggest equity market,” the Nikkei newspaper somehow very accurately “previews” earnings results days or weeks before they are officially reported. Authorities in other jurisdictions might worry “about disclosure violations, or a lack of equal access to price-sensitive information…. In Japan, regulators seem to have turned a blind eye to the ‘Nikkei previews.’” As these are only available in Japanese, they may place “non-Japanese readers at a disadvantage,” along with those who don’t read the newspaper and rely instead on the company’s official public results announcements.
