South China Morning Post (January 29)
At Davos, Chinese Premier Li Qiang provided WEF delegates with an “early and unexpected disclosure… China’s gross domestic product (GDP) had grown by 5.2 per cent in 2023.” This didn’t come across as powerfully convincing evidence that China’s economy is again healthy. Worries remain about China and its economy. “Challenges related to national security, data flows and market barriers still dominate hearts and minds in decision-making.”

“European and US IPO activity has shown ‘signs of thawing’ throughout 2023, as the number of issuances slowly rise,” though hesitance is expected to remain until economic stabilization more fully materializes. The same data from PwC’s latest IPO Watch revealed “mainland China continued to dominate IPO numbers throughout last quarter, accounting for almost 35% of global IPO issuance and raising $11.7bn, followed by the US ($9.3bn) and India ($2.3bn).”

Balancing inventory has taken on additional urgency, as economists warn of dwindling savings accounts, rising credit card debt and the risk of a recession.”

Washington Post (April 15)
“The world has been understandably transfixed by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s horrific invasion of Ukraine,” but we must still stay alert to threats elsewhere. “President Xi Jinping has been quietly taking advantage of the West’s distraction by expanding China’s sphere of influence in the South Pacific. If Washington doesn’t wake up to this threat, China’s efforts to dominate the region will gain dangerous and perhaps irreversible momentum.”
