“Despite the difficulty of putting on the games with a pandemic still raging and freezing conditions even by the standard of snow sports, success in the Winter Olympics is putting Chinese designed technology front and centre.” This provides an excellent stage to advance the country’s “Made in China 2025” strategic plan that is “designed to move the Chinese economy away from being a low-wage factory to the world and toward high tech, advanced design and manufacturing.”

“As much as the Warriors’ Stephen Curry and Draymond Green would love to compete for Team USA, with Steve Kerr an assistant on coach Gregg Popovich’s staff, they can’t even begin to imagine what it might be like, in Japan, with the coronavirus pandemic still raging worldwide….
The IOC should be more than merely concerned about the developments of Saturday, when Japan registered more than 7,000 new COVID-19 cases, the country’s highest total since January, due to a rapidly spreading fourth wave driven by more contagious and deadlier variants of the virus.”

“The NFL was a joke Sunday, at a time when nothing about the coronavirus warrants laughter. In Baltimore, the Ravens reported a positive test for the eighth straight day, further jeopardizing a twice-delayed game against the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. In the Bay Area, the San Francisco 49ers were rendered temporarily homeless, if they want to keep playing football, because of local restrictions.” Make no mistake. “The coronavirus is in charge, and it is raging once again…. It’s impossible to play football out in the open, without a bubble environment”

“Fires are raging at a record rate in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, and scientists warn that it could strike a devastating blow to the fight against climate change.” If the Amazon is “the planet’s lungs,” then they are turning black. Brazil’s space agency estimated “more than 1½ soccer fields of Amazon rainforest are being destroyed every minute of every day” and 1,700 miles away Sao Paulo was engulfed in mid-afternoon darkness with “the sky pitch-black…the sun blanketed by smoke and ash.”
