Washington Post (July 28)

2023/ 07/ 29 by jd in Global News

“Everyone knows, as the Watergate scandal drove home: The coverup is always worse than the crime. Everyone, that is, but Trump.” Should “the allegations in the latest indictment of Donald Trump hold up, the former president is a common criminal — and an uncommonly stupid one.”

Wall Street Journal (July 17)

“Germany has a patchy record in fighting corporate crime. Volkswagen AG ’s giant emissions-cheating scandal was uncovered by California. The U.S. has imposed more money-laundering fines on troubled German lender Deutsche Bank AG than Germany has. BaFin’s decadelong blind spot for Wirecard now raises questions about the country’s ability to enforce securities rules that protect investors.”

New York Times (March 7)

“Canadians can be corrupt, too…. The scandal now enveloping Prime Minister Justin Trudeau—a bilingual, feminist, pro-multicultural liberal who embodies much of what we like to celebrate in our national character” reveals the “darker side to Canada’s smallness.” Things are often too cozy. The nation that comes off as quaint, friendly and cute has a “tiny network of political, business and intellectual elite” that is too “insular and concentrated.”

“Simmering fears of a global trade war. An embarrassing political scandal in Japan. Rapid job-turnover inside the White House and the threat of faster interest rate hikes in the United States….” Yet somehow “markets have brushed aside risks and recurring bad news on geopolitics to stay focused on positive macro-economic cues.”

“The predictably ever-worsening scandal surrounding the Hollywood sexual predator Harvey Weinstein” was not a surprise. In the business, his indiscretions were an open secret. “Another open secret–one that’s more widely known and of even more consequence than Weinstein and his prey” is that “Donald Trump is clearly not fit–temperamentally, intellectually, or, it seems increasingly clear,  psychologically–to continue serving as president of the United States…. It’s all but guaranteed there will come a day for Trump, exactly like the moment we’re experiencing this weekend with Harvey Weinstein, with a flood of people suddenly going public with their behind-closed-doors Trump stories that things were even worse than anyone imagined.”

Bloomberg (May 22)

“Investors dumped Brazil’s stocks and currency Thursday as the country’s ever-proliferating corruption scandal spread to President Michel Temer. This latest twist in a seemingly endless saga not only threatens to stall vital economic reforms but also comes close to showing that the corruption in Brazil’s government is literally beyond control.”

Financial Times (October 18)

2015/ 10/ 19 by jd in Global News

“The scandal engulfing” Volkswagen “is by no means the biggest German economic challenge. Demand from China is slowing sharply, a blow to one of the biggest suppliers of machine tools to that country’s vast manufacturing sector.” The broader challenge, however, remains Germany’s overdependence on a “narrow export-oriented model,” which leaves the country “vulnerable to longer-term underperformance.”

Chicago Tribune (October 5)

2015/ 10/ 07 by jd in Global News

“Computer software now governs virtually every aspect of our lives, from cars to kitchen appliances…. But computer software can deceive us, and this was the disturbing message from the recent Volkswagen scandal, where the German carmaker fitted millions of cars with software that could outsmart emission-control testing.” This new era demands “a code of ethics, a Hippocratic oath, for our computer engineers and the software they create.”

New York Times (August 18)

2015/ 08/ 19 by jd in Global News

“Brazil is in tatters. The economy is in a deepening recession.” On top of that Petrobras is facing a “massive corruption scandal” and the country’s credit rating was just downgraded by Moody’s. “In all this turbulence, it is easy to miss the good news: the fortitude of Brazil’s democratic institutions.” Specifically, “in pursuing bribery at Petrobras, federal prosecutors…have not been deterred by rank or power, dealing a blow to the entrenched culture of immunity among government and business elites.”

Bloomberg (July 21)

“Japan’s corporate-governance code, introduced only a month ago, raised hopes that the country’s ossified corporate culture might finally crack open. The $1.2 billion accounting scandal at Toshiba…underscores how much further the country has to go.”
