The bad news in the UK is that the majority of “firms (55%) are holding off on investment decisions until after the Autumn Budget—set for 26th November.” The good news is that 43% of those businesses “are expecting to increase investment as a result.” The Barclays’ Business Prosperity index expects investment “to grow by 5.5% over the next 12 months, with 89% of businesses remaining confident in their own prosperity.”

Fortune (April 11)
“Billionaire investor Warren Buffett is visiting Japan for the first time in more than a decade, and his thoughts are on his large—and growing—investments in the East Asian nation.” So far, it appears that “Buffett is looking to increase those stakes again.”

“The UK’s higher than expected inflation results forced the Bank of England to prioritise bringing it down, rather than focusing on the fractures of the banking sector.” In February, “UK inflation hit 10.4%…an unexpected increase that followed three months of consecutive declines.”

Wall Street Journal (November 1)
The European Union’s statistics agency released figures that surprised most economists. “Consumer prices were 10.7% higher in October than a year earlier.” This marks “the fastest rate of increase since records began in 1997, two years before the euro was launched,” while at the national level “Germany’s measure of inflation was the highest since December 1951.”

American Banker (June 21)
“The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. plans to hike deposit insurance assessment rates next year — a move that would increase costs for banks as they continue to see high deposit growth more than a year after the last round of pandemic stimulus.” On Tuesday, “the FDIC voted to issue a notice of proposed rulemaking that would raise deposit insurance assessment rates by 2 basis points for all insured depository institutions.”

WARC (April 14)
Marketing spend is set to grow across all 15 major types of media. “Social media sees the largest net budget increase, at +53%, while print and AM/FM radio see the smallest net budget increase, but still at +13%.” Taken as a whole, “WARC Data forecasts global advertising spend to grow by 12.5% this year.”

The cannabis industry “had a breakout moment during the pandemic. Legal cannabis sales in the United States passed $17.5 billion in 2020, a 46% increase over sales in 2019. For many Americans, stocking up on marijuana was as essential as stocking up on toilet paper. And the industry found a way to get it to them.”

The Week (May 23)
In April, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose more sharply than it has in 13 years, “putting data behind the warnings that many economists and businesses have been issuing for weeks.” Inflation is dramatically here. “The question is how long it will stay.” The increase may stem from random coincidences (like a pipeline shut down and insufficient chip supply) or they could be transient symptoms of economic rebooting. But the upward swing might also prove harbinger of runaway inflation to come.

“Florida reported 3,494 new coronavirus cases Sunday, continuing the streak of an increase in statewide infections as the caseload total tops 97,000.” New cases were down from Saturday’s “record high” of 4,049 new daily infections.
